News on 17 Jun 2012

On June 14 the Pattaya Daily News carried a news report alleging that a sports betting call centre associated with internet sportsbook SBObet.com had been raided by police and shut down for illegal gambling activity.

Lt.Col. Sutin Suandokmai of the Bangkok police told reporters that the centre was located in an upmarket bungalow in Butsarakam Village just outside Bangkok, and had been identified during a police undercover and sting operation.

After securing search warrants, a police raiding party visited the premises, seizing evidence and computer and communications equipment, and arresting three women and a man, all under the age of 35.

One of the women arrested later confessed to police that she had rented the house recently with the intention of using it as a sports betting call centre, and that she had been provided with some $155,000 to get the operation up and running in time for the Euro 2012 football championships.
